Secret to Setting Goals

Setting goals is one of the most critical tasks that any person can do. Setting goals allow people to be efficient. It allows people to not waste time and other resources on things that are not congruent with the goals they've set for themselves. In other words, without clear goals, most people will never accomplish much of what they would like to. You may get by, but you will not succeed unless you take the time to think about your goals, write them down, and track your progress in accomplishing them.

Before you can set goals that you can and will reach, there are a few things you want to keep in mind.

1. Write them down. This is the first, and probably the most important, thing you will do in order to set goals that you can reach. As you take the time to write down your goals, two things will happen. First, as you're writing your goals, you're forced to visualize your goals. Second, by writing them down, you're creating a commitment in your mind. The key here is that the more real your goals are to you, the more likely you are to accomplish them.

2. Express them positively. If you think about it, why would you want to write down things you don't want to accomplish? Don't talk down to yourself. You set goals to give yourself the opportunity and clarity to define your life's destination, not to encourage bad behavior or limiting thoughts. Words like "can't" or "won't" only limit your potential. Focus on what you want to happen, not what you want to leave behind. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, it is better to say, "I will adopt healthier lifestyle habits" than "I need to lose weight".

3. Be precise. There's a saying, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up going nowhere". You have to be specific. If you're not specific about your goal, then you're less likely to achieve it. Do you have a time frame you would like to accomplish this goal by? Is this a long-term goal or a short-term goal? How do you see yourself achieving this goal? All of these things are important. Again, the key is to make the goal as real to yourself as possible. If the goal is to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, be specific about these habits. By when would you like to do this? In this step, your goal might look like this, "By December 2009, I will adopt healthier lifestyle habits by drinking more water, watching what I eat, and exercising."

4. Set priorities. Some goals require more time to accomplish. Others require more energy and resources. By setting priorities, you're not wasting time and energy on things that are less important. You're focusing on what needs to be done.

5. Set small & measurable objectives. The last thing you want to do is set objectives. As you begin to visualize your goals, you may notice that there are steps in reaching them. These steps can be translated into objectives. The reason many people have a hard time reaching the goals they set for themselves is because they often set goals that may be too high, but more likely it is because they do not measure their progress along the way. Not being able to measure your progress or setting goals that are too high tell your mind that you don't have a way of reaching your goals. In other words, you're telling limiting the likelihood of your success. If your goal is to adopt the habits stated above, then your objectives might be as follows: I will exercise 3-4 times each week. I will cook lean, healthy meals at home. I will drink water instead of soda. With these small objectives, each week you can measure your progress. As you start to accomplish those objectives, you can pat yourself on the back. The more patting on the back, the more likely your mind will start to believe that you are on your way to achieving your goal of losing weight by December 2009.

As you set your goals and start to reach them, you'll notice that your goal sheet becomes a living document to you. At times you may want to change a goal or reprioritize your goals. Feel free to do so, it's yours. The more you work with it, the more real it is to you. And the more real it is, the more likely to accomplish it.

Moving forward

So it seems that this whole process of running a business while going to school full-time is not exactly simple. It's so easy to get lost in the dreams and not remember how difficult the path to reaching them might be. A wise person once said, "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." They couldn't be more right.

So as you're following me on this long and arduous journey towards success, there are a few things we're going to be focusing on along the way.
  1. goal-setting
  2. time-management
  3. renewal
Over the years, it has been said over and over how important it is to set goals. Not only is it important to set goals, but what is even more crucial is that there needs to be a clear path to achieving those goals.

In a few days, I'll discuss goal-setting in more detail. For now, just take the time to write down some things you would like to accomplish within the next year, your short-term goals. If you refer back to my previous blog about "new beginnings," you can get an idea on what short-term goals are (e.g., resolutions).

The second thing I want to focus on is time-management. As a full-time student, time management is one of the most critical skills that I have learned. In many ways, I'm still learning how to do it efficiently. With familial responsibilities, work, and school, for many there is barely enough time to eat let alone worry about running a business from home.

How does one find the time to start a business? Although challenging, it is not impossible. The great thing about working from home is you can do it at your own leisure. Right now, it's 12:35 A.M. I should be sleeping, but alas...I'm on here, talking to you.

The last thing I mentioned above is renewal. The worst thing you can do is
crash and burn. I've been there and done that. I have the scars to prove it. As easy it may be to try to do it all, never forget that your body, mind, and soul need rest and renewal in order to function at their best. Therefore, take the time to do that. Whether it be an hour each day or just one day out of the week, don't forget to rest, rejuvenate, and renew.

So my fellow readers, don't get lost in the rat race. Times are changing. You have to keep up. Just remember this: Do what you love and do it with intention and purpose.

Until next time... ~Krezi

New Beginnings...

Hi Everybody,

My name is Gaelle aka Krezi. I reside in South Florida.
In case you're wondering, I'm 22 years old, originally from Haiti. Besides operating my business from home (which I'll tell you more about later... Hold your horses, cowboy!!! ), I am a full-time student working towards my Master's degree. I am a pretty active person, but have high ambitions. With that said, New Year's Resolutions are right around the corner...

Although resolutions are usually saved for the new year, I like to give myself a headstart. As I get older, each year seems to tell a different story for my life. 2007 was a year of remarkable losses for me. On the other hand, the lessons I learned during that year would not have been learned had it not been for the pain I experienced. 2008, was my year of renewal. Renewal of mind, body, and soul. I don't want to get too mushy, but let's just say that now, I have a sense of direction. At 22, I'm not doing too bad, huh...

I'm sure, later on down the line I'll come to realize that what I thought I knew was not what it really is..but I guess we'll worry about that when I get there.. For now, " I'm focused man! You Should know this, man "! (50 Cent, just in case you're wondering...)

Back to the point...Resolutions for 2008 are as follows.

  1. Gym 3-4 times each week
  2. Eat healthy
  3. Grow Krezi's Home Biz (www.krezishomebiz.com coming to you soon!!)
    *Publish crash course on starting an online business including chapters on...
    * time-management
    * article writing
    * blogging
    * SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  4. Continue pursuing my Master's Degree...Yes, I'm a full-time student as well...
  5. Expand my network of friends (Myspace, Facebook, Blogger, & the real world)
For now that's what I have planned. In later blogs, I will tell you how I'm doing on these things and anything interesting and new in my life..

Until next time... ~Krezi
